Do Jews Cause Antisemitism?
Note: although I do agree with the general argument in this video, it should be remembered that Judaism is one of the Abrahamic religions that predates the Enlightenment and so does not really fit in with the modern world. Especially because it isn't universalist (meaning everyone can easily convert to it, as is the case with Buddhism, Christianity and Islam, or join it, like Western, secular, meritocratic civilization) but rather an ethnocentric, tribal religion (something you're born into). Also, some individual Jews and particular organizations have, through their outspoken activism, done much to threaten and therefore anger non-Jews. Activism by or on behalf of minorities, like immigrants for example or sexual minorities, tends to threaten and anger the majority. Much of recent antisemitism, i.e. of the last decade, revolves around the migrant crisis in Europe and the USA.
Well known and very influential in the so-called Alt-Right is the following 2010 quote by Jewish-American philosophy lecturer Barbara Lerner Spectre, founding director of Paideia, the European Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden: "I think there is a resurgence of antisemitism because at this point in time Europe has not yet learned how to be multicultural. And I think we [Jews] are going to be part of the throes of that transformation, which must take place. Europe is not going to be the monolithic societies they once were in the last century. Jews are going to be at the center of that. It's a huge transformation for Europe to make. They are now going into a multicultural mode, and Jews will be resented because of our leading role. But without that leading role and without that transformation, Europe will not survive." Such bold statements, originally aired by the Israel Broadcasting Authority and then uploaded to youtube, certainly do not help. Spectre of course does not represent the entire Jewish community, but she isn't alone either. Harvard Professor Noel Ignatiev said: "The key to solving the social problems of our age is to abolish the White race. The goal of abolishing the White race is on its face so desirable that some may find it hard to believe that it could incur any opposition other than from committed White supremacists. We'll keep bashing the dead White males, and the live ones, and the females too, until the social construct known as the White race is destroyed. Not deconstructed, but destroyed." The intended meaning of these words is expressed by his famous slogan: "Treason to the White race is Loyalty to Humanity." In other words: he's championing Enlightenment universalism ("There's only one race: the human race") in an extremely provocative way. But if the White race and Whiteness are social constructs, aren't the Jewish people and Judaism social constructs too? If the White race should be abolished and destroyed, shouldn't the Jewish diaspora be abolished and destroyed too? Should we bash the dead Jewish males, and the live ones, and the females too? People like Spectre and Ignatiev (as well as organizations like the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, Anti-Defamation League and Open Society Foundations) have done much to encourage antisemitism among contemporary Europeans and Americans. No doubt they expressed themselves with the best of intentions, but "The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
Although historically some of the antisemitism was caused or stimulated by Catholic dogma and Protestant conspiracy theories, some of it was caused by Jewish activism, typically revolutionary, woke (anti-White) and leftist activism, and some of it by the ethnocentrism and separatism that is integral to orthodox Judaism. As everything in history and politics, this issue is complex.
